Encuentra el plan perfecto con tu familia: un día en Tarragona
Planning your holiday can be tedious work, especially when it comes to family vacations. You’re always looking for that elusive ideal place: one that offers rest and tranquility and, in turn, has entertaining activities for the little ones. It can be almost impossible to find the perfect combination! But this won’t be the case if you travel to Tarragona, the perfect city for your family trip. You’ll explore its old town, its Roman ruins and its countless restaurants. Likewise, you can relax and refresh yourself on some of the best family beaches in Spain, with national and international quality certificates. The pleasant Mediterranean climate will accompany you throughout your trip and will bathe your summer memories in sunshine.
Thanks to its wide range of family activities, Tarragona is the ideal option for you, offering leisure, relaxation and family moments in its streets, beaches, restaurants and cultural spaces. Even so, you’ll still have to organize your trip well to make the most of the time with your little ones, see all the sites, and get a proper rest. If you don't know where to start and you’d like to enjoy your dream family holiday, we can suggest several ideas that will meet all your expectations (and those of the little ones!). Take note!
Tarragona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the capital of Hispania at the time of the Roman Empire. That’s why, even to this day, we can still enjoy the feel of Roman civilization in the city, both in the form of monuments and ruins. Much of the modern-day city was built over the centuries around the imposing structures of Tarraco, its ancient name as a Roman city. Tarragona’s Roman amphitheatre is located very close to the sea, next to El Miracle beach. Guided visits are possible, offering an exciting and, in turn, educational activity for children and adults alike.
In the place formerly dedicated to the worship and homage to the emperor, the city's cathedral now stands, built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Without a doubt, it is an iconic place to visit, both inside and out, and its grand size and majesty will give the little ones a precious memory of their trip (not counting the countless photos, of course!).
Between monuments and buildings, you can enjoy plazas full of life where bars and restaurants abound. They are the perfect place to take a break between visits and let you enjoy the good weather and the local cuisine. The best known plaza is located in the old Roman Provincial Forum and gives you the opportunity to have a drink with the family, surrounded by history and surprising buildings. What better place to take a break in the sun with the family?
Of course, you can also visit other ancient Roman buildings, such as the theatre, the forums, the wall and the aqueduct. Some of them also have guided tours, while others, such as El Pont del Diable (the “Devil’s Bridge” aqueduct) are outdoors and can be visited completely free of charge. If you fancy spending a day traveling to the times of ancient Rome, Tarragona has the perfect plan for you and your family: the Roman Route. This consists of a tour of all the city’s Roman monuments and ruins, both in the urban area and on the outskirts. Embark on an archaeological adventure and make your little ones feel like authentic Romans!
The Camino de Ronda is a 9 km path that runs along the coast from the Pilons area to the Salou Lighthouse, located at Cap Salou. In addition, there is another 1,250 m path from Calle de la Falconera (Cap Salou) that reaches the Camino del Racó, the beginning of the municipality of La Pineda. The Camino de Ronda discovers the great natural and scenic wealth of the area. In addition to the many panoramic views that you’ll enjoy along the way, the path runs through different coves and beaches in Salou, making it an original way to discover the Cap Salou area and its natural charms.
It is a path in a natural environment, away from the tourist area, which passes by several beaches in the municipality and offers unforgettable panoramic views. The youngest members of the family will enjoy them too, as well as exploring and discovering the local flora and fauna. The trail ends in Cap Salou, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful corners of Salou, which will delight lovers of the sea and nature.
This cape, thanks to its location, is the perfect spot for observing seabirds that are difficult to see from the beach. Thus, with the help of telescopes and binoculars, you can see a wide variety of Mediterranean bird species, as well as various species of seagulls, which are relatively abundant and easy to see in the spring and autumn. The Camino de Ronda is a highlight of any visit to Salou and it can result in a spectacular family adventure. Don’t miss it!
Reus has a special bond with Antoni Gaudí as it is the city where the famous architect was born. One of the things to do when visiting the capital of the Baix Camp province, is to learn a little more about the origins of the architect and his work. The first recommended stop is the Gaudí Centre,an interactive three-storey museum in the centralPlaça del Mercadal. This centre is dedicated to getting to know the genius behind La Pedrera and Park Güell better. Tickets cost 9 euros for adults and 5 euros for children between 9 and 14 years.
The Reus Tourist Office has prepared a Modernist walking route. This consists of a leisurely stroll where you will visit the city’s most important and iconic facades. In total there are 26 buildings, among which Casa Gasull, Casa Rull and Casa Navas stand out. For more information, ask at the Gaudí Centre in Plaça del Mercadal or visit their website. A walk through Reus is always a delight for the eyes!
Visiting a park and getting on a train is always a winning combination for a family day out. Right next to the Sanctuary of Misericòrdia is Trenet Park, another of the city’s beautiful green spaces. This park is filled with families, especially on Sundays, the day when the Friends of the Railroad Association opens the station to the public. It is a miniature train that follows a circuit and goes around the park a couple of times. And take note: adults can also climb aboard! The train goes through a tunnel and even over a bridge with a fountain and water spouts. The trip, which costs very little, only runs on Sunday mornings and circulates inside the park. The park also has a variety of children’s play areas and a zip line. It’s fantastic way to end your getaway to Reus with the family.
